What Is Septoplasty?

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure to correct a deviated nasal septum—the wall that divides the nasal passages—when its misalignment causes breathing problems. A deviated septum can lead to nasal obstruction, snoring, headaches, or nosebleeds, and can significantly affect daily life.


In many cases, septoplasty is performed alongside turbinate reduction to further open the airway and improve function.

What is a deviated septum?

The nasal septum is the wall that separates the left and right nasal cavities. When this wall is displaced or crooked (as shown in the diagrams), it can obstruct airflow—this is called a deviated septum.

Surgical considerations:
  • If the deviation is located in the rear lower zone (blue area in the diagram), surgery is generally straightforward.
  • However, if the deviation affects the front and upper zone (red area), the correction becomes more complex and requires delicate surgical planning. (figure 2.)
